Professionalization
Back to Graduate Studies
Participation in Departmental Governance.
A graduate student representative is elected by students in each
of the major programs to represent their interests and pose their
questions at the meetings of French and Spanish sections. In addition,
graduate students serve on the undergraduate curriculum committee
of each major section, on the Undergraduate Awards Committee, and
on search committees.
Support for Professional Travel
Grants for Travel to Present Research. The presentation of scholarly
papers at academic fora and conferences--local, regional and national--can
help students to develop professional skills that will serve them
in their later career. Graduate students in RLL are encouraged to
present papers in a departmental forum, Entre Nous; at the university
level, in the Graduate Student Forum; and at conferences. The department
provides partial funding for such presentations, often matched by
funding from the College and the Graduate Student Council. Each
year up to three students receive additional funding from a scholarship
donated to the department by McGraw-Hill.
RLL Grants for Travel to Interview at the MLA. PhD students who
are entering the job market are also guaranteed departmental support
toward attending the MLA Convention at which they will interview.
