Required Course on Pedagogy

Back to Graduate Studies

Practicum in Advanced College Teaching.
This course is designed to familiarize graduate students with the preparation and teaching of standard courses in the undergraduate foreign language program: post-intermediate language, literature, and culture. These are 2 credit courses, limited to students who are ABD (or nearly), in which the student "shadows" a professor teaching a 3000-level course: a survey of literature, civilization, grammar and composition, or commercial French or Spanish. SPN 2240, Intensive Aural and Reading Comprehension in Spanish, is also available for shadowing. The student works with the professor through all steps of the course: preparation of syllabus, book order, reserve list; creation and grading of examinations. The graduate student is expected to attend the class, and may teach one or two class sessions, but s/he is not to be a grader for the professor. Students may only shadow one course per term.
