Translation Services
Back to News
- Welcome to the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures.
Our main mission is to conduct research and teach the languages,
literatures and cultural expressions of the countries where French,
Italian, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, Catalan, and Spanish are
spoken.
Accurate, context-sensitive translation is a highly developed
professional skill. Fees charged for this and related languages
services are commensurate to the training it requires. The Department
of Romance Languages and Literatures does not have a translation
program or service, but some of its faculty and graduate students
will occasionally do translations, interpreting and proficiency
testing. Each translator sets his or her own rate, which varies
according to a number of factors, including: training of translator,
complexity or level of specialization of the text, urgency,
legibility and other considerations. Some charge by the page,
others by the word, others by the hour. Expect to pay between
$30-140 per page or hour. Payment is made to the individual
who renders the services, and not to the department. Other UF
units requesting translation will have to work out acceptable
payment parameters when such payment will be considered "Additional
University Employment".
- Translation
- The complexity of the topic, the urgency, the direction of the
target language and other factors impact on the cost of the translation.

requires testers who have been certified by ACTFL. Each tester
sets the rate for services. Travel time is charged separately.
- Interpreting
- The translation of verbal communication for various situations,
e.g. court or legal, business, professional conferences, etc.
requires special skills. Each interpreter sets the rate for services.
